Father of the Symphony

Handel was the Baroque composer who wrote The Harmonious Blacksmith; he also wrote lots of operas and organ concertos. But the Father of the Symphony was Franz Joseph Haydn (of the Classical period – about 50 years later).

The only symphonies that Handel wrote, that I'm aware of, are two instrumental passages in the Messiah. Haydn wrote 104 symphonies; it was he that developed the symphony from a musical interlude such as Handel's into a musical form in its own right; that's why he's known as the Father of the Symphony.
